40 missing in Kebbi boat mishap

At least 40 people were missing following a boat mishap along River Niger in Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State on Monday.

Confirming the incident to Apex News Exclusive in Birnin Kebbi through phone call, the Council Chairman, Alhaji Bala Mohammed said the boat carrying 50 traders and their items was coming from Kasabo in Agwara local government area of Niger State to Yauri town for commercial purposes.

According to him, the boat capsized as a result of waves in River Niger saying, only 10 people were rescued while the remaining 40 and the boat were still in the river and search for the missing bodies and wreckage of the boat was still on.

However through a press statement made available to newsmen in Birnin Kebbi by the Chief Press Secretary Ahmed Idris, Kebbi State Government condoled with the immediate family members of the victims, Yauri Emirate Council, Yauri Local Government Area over the ugly incident.

The Governor prayed for quick recovery of those who sustained injuries during what he described as the ugly development and prayed to Almighty God to put an end to the recurrence of such event.

Lack of compliance to safety measures such as use of life jackets and overlooking were commonly associated with boat mishaps in riverine communities in Kebbi State and could be minimized when authorities implement relevant laws to that effect.
