70 children selected for 2-day Table Tennis championship arrive Calabar

No fewer than 70 children, ages from 9 to 17 selected from South-South and South-East regions of Nigeria to participate in a 2-day Table Tennis tourney have arrived Calabar.

The tourney, sponsored by 5 times Olympian, Offiong Edem, holds from 5th to 6th July 2024 inside the Table Tennis Court of UJ Esuene Stadium Calabar. 

Briefing newsmen, Offiong said 30 of the children are from different parts of Cross River State while the other 40 are from Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa and othrr Southeast states like Abia and Imo.

She said there will be Under 14 category for Boys as well as Under 17 category for Girls.

Offiong who ranks number 1 in Nigeria and 98 in the world disclosed that prize money will be for 1st to 8th winners, adding that there are assorted prizes for other winners.

“This is the fourth edition of this Foundation tourney.  It will be bigger than previous editions.

“Out of the 70 kid and teenage Table Tennis players expected from parts of SouthSouth and Southeast regions of  Nigeria, the 1st prize winner will smile home with N55,000, 2nd prize N50,000, 3rd prize N45,000. Winners from 9th positions will get assorted gifts

“This is my way of giving back to the society.   I have been able to discover some children with budding talents since the 1st editions. They will go places

“I have solely being sponsoring this tournament since these four years. But this edition, my colleagues have supported with equipment. Another gave prize money.”
