A coalition of youths in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rose from a meeting in Abuja Wednesday night demanding the exit of the acting National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Umar Iliya Damagum from the position for peace to reign.

They called on critical stakeholders and other elders in the party to do the needful and prevail on Damagum to leave when a new National Chairman will be selected, approved on 24 July, 2024 and ratify by the National Working Committee (NWC), on 15 August, 2024.

Damagum, the Deputy National Chairman (North) of the party, got a court injunction to stay beyond 15 August.

Damagum is in acting capacity following the resignation of Dr. Iyorchia Ayu in March, 2024. Another member is to be selected by Critical Stakeholders from the North-Central geopolitical zone to complete the tenure of Dr. Ayu which ought to terminate in December, 2025.

A youth who was at the meeting confided to a select group of journalists in Abuja on Thursday that the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT), His Excellency Chief Adolphus Wabara, other members of the BoT and that of the National Working Committee (NWC) should act now in the interest of the party to prevail on Damagum to withdraw the court injunction and step down as acting National Chairman.

He pointed out that if Damagum is not removed now, any action he takes after 15 August will be illegal, not binding on anyone and further deepen the crisis in the party.

The youth who said he is not officially asked to talk to the media, pointed out that among the decisions reached were to urge Critical Stakeholders from the North-Central not to allow the substantive National Chairman to be selected come from outside their zone, prevail on Damagum not to parade himself as acting National Chairman and not to allow external forces destabilize the party.

According to him, the coalition of the youths, mainly from the North-Central geopolitical zone, noted that as consultations toward 2027 general elections get under way, the PDP must be steadfast and not to allow selfish interests like that of Damagum make it lose focus.

He said the coalition noted that the party is greater than any individual and Damagum is not superior to the party and must obey its Constitution, laws and regulations.

The coalition noted that internal disaffection should not be allowed to polarize the party now as efforts are made to bring back aggrieved members into the fold and not let Damagum have his way.

He said during the meeting, attendees agreed that what Damagum is doing is akin to anti-party and should be sanctioned appropriately.
