We are delighted to announce that Sky News’ Alex Crawford and the BBC’s Jeremy Bowen – two of the world’s most experienced correspondents – will present the Rory Peck Awards 2018 from London’s BFI Southbank on Thursday 1st November.
Alex Crawford returns as a Rory Peck Awards host for the third time, bringing with her thirty years of experience as a foreign correspondent. Alex reports from across Africa for Sky News and also covers the world’s big stories as their Special Correspondent.
Alex’s many assignments include the Arab Spring uprisings in Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain, Syria and Libya where she was the first reporter to broadcast live from Tripoli’s Green Square as rebel forces took over the Libyan capital. From Africa she has covered numerous stories including the hunt for Boko Haram in Nigeria and Cameroon and the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. In Asia, she has reported from India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. In 2017, her reports from Myanmar’s Rakhine State provided the first filmed evidence of the desperation and deprivation of thousands of stranded Rohingya Muslims.
Alex has received numerous awards, including the RTS Journalist of the Year an unprecedented five times, the James Cameron Memorial Award, the London Press Club Award, the Foreign Press Association Award, the Charles Wheeler Award and two Women in Film and TV awards. In 2012 she was awarded an OBE for services to journalism.
Jeremy Bowen is the Middle East Editor for BBC News. He has had a part in covering many of the world’s major news stories since the late 1980s, including almost 20 wars. He joined the corporation in 1984 as a news trainee and has previously held roles as Rome Correspondent, Special Correspondent, Foreign Affairs Correspondent, Geneva Correspondent, and a presenter on BBC Breakfast.
Jeremy has been widely recognised within the industry, winning three RTS awards, an Emmy, a Peabody, Sian Phillips Award from BAFTA Cymru, three Bayeux war reporting prizes, Sony Gold award, Silver Nymph Monte Carlo TV Festival, Gold Medal NY TV Festival, James Cameron award and the Charles Wheeler award. A former graduate of University College London, he became a Fellow at UCL in 2005, and has received honorary fellowships from the Universities of Aberystwyth, South Wales, Cardiff, Cardiff Met and Wales Trinity St David, as well as an honorary doctorate from Nottingham Trent University. He is the author of three books.
The Rory Peck Awards now in their 24th year, are the only awards dedicated to the work of freelancers working behind the camera in news and current affairs – the video journalists, filmmakers, and news cameramen and women who work independently to bring us stories from across the world. The ceremony is the main fundraiser for the Rory Peck Trust with proceeds from ticket sales directly supporting our work assisting freelance journalists around the world.
This year’s finalists will be announced on Wednesday 12th September.
