The Anambra State House of Assembly has urged the Federal Government, as well as the executive arm of the State government to introduce more measures that would end clashes between farmers and herdsmen.
The House passed the resolution following à motion sponsored as à matter of urgent public importance by the majority leader and member representing Anambra West, Chief Victor Okoye, during Thursday
The House acknowledged the swift action of Anambra State Security Council, on the directive of Governor Willie Obiano which resolved the recent farmers and herdsmen conflict at Anam, Anambra West Local Government Area.
Chief Okoye, told members that the herdsmen recently invaded Mmiata Anam through the boundary between Kogi and Anambra and killed some
persons while grazing their cattle in farmlands in the area.
Chief Okoye appealed to the Federal, and State Governments, as well as Security agencies to introduce more measures to prevent escalation.
He also praised Governor Willie Obiano for the pro-active and unique way adopted by Anambra State towards managing the herdsmen issue in the state.
On his part, the member representing Ayamelum Constituency, Honourable
Uchenna Okafor, lamented that the herdsmen and farmers’ clashes have degenerated from destruction of farmlands to killing of farmers, a situation he regretted has compelled his people who are predominantly farmers to stop farming, for fear of losing their lives.
The member representing Njikoka Two Constituency, Dr. Pete Ibida, described the act as very pathetic and obnoxious, even as he urged the appropriate authorities to do more to solve the problem before it becomes uncontrollable.
In their reactions, the member representing Ihiala One Constituency, Barrister Chidi Udemmadu and his Aguata One Constituency counterpart,
Chief Ikechukwu Umeh, supported the motion.
Speaker of the House, Mrs. Rita Maduagwu who condemned the negative activities of herdsmen in the state, read out the resolution.
