Anambra State Government has designated 28 centres to house Internally Displaced People (IDP) who might be displaced as a result of flooding.
The State Government decided to take proactive steps based on earlier predictions by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) that heavy rainfall could be accompanied by great flooding in some areas of the state.
The State Government had also taken steps to ensure de-silting of drainages to stem flooding in some of the flood-prone areas and communities.
A statement made available to Apex News by the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (ASEMA) identified eight of such centres in eight local government areas.
The centres are located in Ayamelum with six clusters, Anambra East with 6; Ogbaru, 3; Onitsha South, 2; Onitsha North, 4; Awka North, 3; Ihiala, 2 and Ekwusigo with 2 clusters.
The statement added “The centres, mainly schools, medical facilities, Church premises and LG headquarters are meant to provide temporary shelters for displaced people from their homes in flood-prone areas.”
