Anambra farmers urged to embrace insurance

Farmers in the state have been urged to insure their crops against disasters like fireout break, lightening, windstorm, flood, droughts, pest and other diseases that attack crops.

The call was made during a sensitisation workshop organised for the farmers at Umueze Anam,Anambra West Local Council Area by IFAD-Value Chain in collaboration with the Anambra State Ministry of Agriculture.

The Team Leader and Liaison Officer, IFAD-Value Chain in Anambra West Council Area, Mr.Rufus Imoka, noted that the sensitisation was for farmers in Anambra West to key into the insurance programme to ensure that their crops get insurance cover against unforeseen disasters.

Mr. Imoka commended the state government for its interventions and support to farmers in the state, especially in Anambra West by providing inputs through the Agriculture Ministry.

Mr. Emmanuel Chukwukwelu, Agricultural Production Officer IFAD-Value Chain Anambra State,said the workshop was to stress the need for insurance to avoid losses and protect farm produce.

He noted that the peculiarity of the Council Area made insurance imperative for farmers in the area, which he noted would also enable them to get government assistance.

A Resource Person, Mr. Andrew Uzomah, the Branch Manager, Nigeria Agricultural Insurance Corporation, Anambra State who spoke on the topic “The Relevance of Nigeria’s Agricultural Insurance Corporation to IFAD-VCDP, Anambra State’’, enumerated the objectives of the insurance scheme to include offering protection to the Nigerian farmer which Value Chain in Anambra State takes care of, through provision of appropriate compensation, increasing the agricultural credit leading to farmers, minimizing the need for emergency assistance provided by government and provision of financial support to farmers in the event of losses.

He appealed to farmers in the state, especially those in Anambra West which is prone to disasters like flood to key into the insurance scheme to get their cropsinsured.
