Anglican Bishop tasks religious leaders to preach Godly principles

The Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos, (Anglican Communion), Rt. Rev. Humphrey Olumakaiye, has urged religious leaders to preach Godly principles as their contribution toward addressing the root of corruption in the country.
Olumakaiye gave the advice on Thursday during a courtesy visit to the Prelate, Methodist Church of Nigeria, Dr Samuel Uche, in his office in Lagos.
He also called on religious leaders teach and preach honest living, adding that wealth acquired without labour was not only deceitful but also a call to corruption.
“I believe our focus should be in sanitising the whole environment by fighting corruption to a standstill and there is need to come together as one body to fight corruption.
“We know that together, we will be able to defeat this cancer destroying every fabric of our nation and also in recommitting, rededicating ourselves to prayers for the country,’’ he said.
He also urged religious leaders to focus more on improving the spirituality, educational and health standard of the people.
“We believe that as a Diocese, the Anglican, the Methodist, through our renowned ministry, synergising in health and education can take the country to another level.
“This is the time churches should come out and defend their faith that is being bastardised by all forms of teaching that we have in the country today because the gospel has been diluted.”
Olumakaiye said that his visit was to foster relationship with Uche and to intimate him on the centenary anniversary of the diocese of Lagos coming up 2019.
Receiving Olumakaiye, Uche has urged Nigerians, irrespective of faith, to promote and sustain religious harmony and peaceful coexistence for the development of the country.
“If religious leaders can humble themselves, mingle with the people on the streets: traders, people in motor parks, pray for them, they in turn will be encouraged to promote peace in the country.
“Humility is the hallmark of a Christian, anybody that is proud cannot be a good minister, you must be very humble and down to earth,’’ he said.
He thanked the Bishop and his entourage for their visit and promised to collaborate with them on evangelism and ecumenism.
“I promise that we will work together and there are other things we will initiate that will bring us closer.
“Maybe when we start it, we will draw other churches into it.
“We will practice pure ecumenism here in Lagos to show other people example of what ecumenism and Christian relationship will be.
He also urged religious leaders to be more concerned with the welfare of their members.
“Giving back to humanity is our concern, putting a smile on the faces of the less privileged in the church is our emphasis, we are not flamboyant, we want to have the mind of Christ.
“If you have the mind of Christ, you will work for unity, we should add spiritual value to the church,’’ he said.(NAN)
