Bauchi Environmental Protection Agency cleans, disinfects roundabouts, bans open defecation

Worried by indiscriminate open defecation at almost all of the roundabouts in Bauchi metropolis, management of Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA), Tuesday evening embarked on cleaning, disinfecting the places after which it placed a ban on open defecation in all the roundabouts across the state.
The ban was announced by the Director General of BASEPA, Dr Ibrahim Kabir while monitoring and inspecting the clean up and disinfection exercise of all the roundabouts in the State Capital.
According to him, the cleaning, disinfecting and the ban are part of the strategy adopted by the Agency in providing lasting solutions to open defecation in the roundabouts and in the state in general.
Other measures taken to ensure open defecation free atmosphere include provision of more public toilets in the vicinity of the roundabouts and also in all the urban centres in the State.


He also said that, the state government is on the process of rebuilding and redesigning of the roundabouts to make them more attractive and beautiful saying that in the interim, the Agency will engage the services of security organisations for the provision of strict surveillance at all the facilities in addition of providing more public toilets around the roundabout and other urban centres in the state to attain open defecation free.
The Director General urged the general public to support the Agency by providing relevant information and reporting anyone found in the acts which he said, the culprits will appear before the Environmental Mobile Court of the Agency.
While commending the commitments of his staff towards achieving this, Ibrahim Kabir also tasked the Desk Officer, Land Use Management of the Agency to put more efforts in ensuring cleanliness in and around the roundabouts and pledged to continue carrying everyone along to achieve sustainable development in the environmental Sector in the State.
Recall that the Director General and team of professionals from the Agency had on Monday inspected all the roundabouts in preparation of the exercise
