Carpenter docked for alleged illegal connection of electricity
The Police on Wednesday arraigned a carpenter, Abdullahi Maiyaki, in Mpape Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, for alleged illegal connection of electricity.
The defendant, a resident of Jahi village, Abuja, is facing a count charge of theft, an offence he denied committing.
The prosecutor, Mbukwen Augustine, had alleged that the defendant trespassed into the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) property and illegally connected electricity into his workshop
Augustine told the court that one Augustine Ubani, staff of AEDC Apo Regional office, Abuja, on Aug. 18, reported the matter at the Mabushi Police Station.
According to Augustine, the complainant said that on the same date at about 10:00p.m, while he was on patrol, he discovered that the defendant had trespassed into AEDC transformer and connected electricity into his workshop.
The prosecutor alleged that on inspection, it was discovered that the defendant had been consuming electricity in his carpentry workshop without authorisation.
Augustine said that during police investigation, the defendant admitted to have committed the offence.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provision of Section 287 of the Penal Code.
The judge, Hassan Muhammad, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100, 000 with a surety in like sum.
The case was adjourned until September 24 for hearing. (NAN)
