Commissioner for Social Welfare and Community Development, Mrs. Margaret Ene-Ita has cautioned persons whose parents and relatives have become older not to abandon them because of old age.
She spoke when she and five management personnel in her ministry attended the anniversary celebration of Mother Elizabeth Redeemed Children Home in Calabar yesterday.
Represented by Mrs Kumum David Obeten, director of social welfare, the commissioner stressed that the elderly ones need good care and not to be antagonized because of their old age related behaviours.
She called on churches, associations and groups to think towards efforts to resettle and care for retirees, older ones and the weak in the society, not necessarily waiting on government.
“We must commend how organisation like Brotherhood of the Cross and Star are contributing to social services by establishing orphanages and welfare centres.
“They have a facility in Calabar where they senior citizens together for care giving.
“Few days ago, we had paid an unannounced visit to their orphanage. We were pleasantly surprised and happy with the good care they accord the children. We commend them.
“We encourage many more homes to give good welfare attention to children and older people in their cares.”
According to her, social services like this is the actual work of God.
