The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has called on spirited members of the public, organizations and religious houses not to wait until it is festive periods to remember Street children and other less privileged members of the society.
Chairman of the Association in Cross River State, Mrs Rekpene Uket made the call Friday when they celebrated street children in the state capital, Calabar, when they marked Valentine Day.
“These children are part and parcel of our society. We should not wait until Valentine’s Day or any festive period before we show them love.
“As much as we have the opportunity, we should relate with them and find ways to change their situation,” she added.
Uket emphasized the significance of showing love to the less privileged, noting that Valentine’s Day is a time to spread love and ensure that no one is left out, especially vulnerable children.
“We have come to reassure these children that no matter the situation, God still loves them.
“As mothers, we want them to feel loved and valued,” Mrs. Uket stated.
She also used the occasion to call on the government to take urgent steps in addressing the issue of street children in Calabar by providing rehabilitation and reintegration programmes.
NAWOJ recommended equipping these children with skills in order to offer them a chance at a better life.
This way, the growing problem of homelessness among minors, will reduce.
