Given the exorbitant cost of politicking and the poor economic and financial status of the youths in Nigeria, the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor of Kaduna State, Barrister James Kanyip has called on legislatives to give room for independent candidacy as it will enabled the youths to successfully contest elections without shouldering the burden of outrageous financial costs associated with politics and politicking.

Kanyip, made the call at a one day summit organized by Kaura Youth Coalition (KYC) in Kagoro, Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna state with theme; Circumventing the Challenges.

Kanyip, who is optimistic that independent candidacy will also discouraged godfatherism, noting that the successful candidates will be loyal to only the electorates that votes for them.

He called on the youths to join and start politics at their own level and be well conversant with it before contesting for any position.

“Insulting leaders from outside; via social media platforms cannot change anything, the youths must be united, focus and courageous.” He added

The Deputy Chief of Staff, who lamented on the lack of concern by the old politicians to mentor the younger ones, said effective mentorship affects and influences the processes and outcomes in leadership including succession.

“Mentoring produces leaders that ensure continuity and maintain the culture and values of the institution because such leaders have not only been taught but also groomed and nurtured. They climb on the shoulders of the old politicians to become effective and visionary in political leadership.

“Mentoring is not to be confused with godfatherism, which is exploitative and destructive and self-serving in the short and long run. Unlike godfatherism, mentoring is a power-free relationship based on mutual respect and value for both mentor and mentee. Mentorship should not also be confused with ‘monetization’ whereby youths consider given money and other handouts to them by the old politicians as mentorship. Mentorship is earned by reputation and integrity of purpose, not for purposes of exploitation. Mentorship here is about succession in political leadership.” He said

The Provost, Kaduna State University, Kafanchan Campus, Professor Ibrahim Abbas Sodangi who spoke on Maximizing Agro Potentials in Kaura, urged the youth in Southern Kaduna to engage in rainy and dry season farming, and use the opportunity of fertile land in the area for Agricultural Processing and Agricultural Marketing to economically empowered themselves and not waiting for white collar jobs.

Earlier speaking, the President Kaura Youth Coalition, Bawa Emmanuel Gwazeyiet, said they were informed by the insecurity and economic challenges to organize the summit so as to look into different dimensions and the way forward.

He encouraged the youth to participate fully in politics and governance and try to narrow the gap between the people in office and the leaders.

He also called on the youth in Kaura to continue to embrace everybody and live in peace so as to pave ways for development in the area.

At the end of the summit, the Coalition donated food items to the victims of Kaura attack that are taking refuge at Kagoro Townhall, venue of the event.
