A community leader has appealed to the federal government to establish a specialized university in Awka, Anambra State, dedicated to blacksmithing and technology.

The proposed Federal University of Blacksmithing and Technology would aim to promote and develop the ancient craft of blacksmithing, while also driving technological innovation and entrepreneurship in the region.

Chief Jonathan Nzekwe, a Community Leader in Awka, made the call while speaking with newsmen on the need to revamp the blacksmith industry, which Awka is known for.

He stated that establishing a federal university of Blacksmithing and Technology in Awka will help restore the lost glory of the blacksmithing trade and create jobs for the teeming youths.

He highlighted the blacksmith trade’s potential as a significant source of foreign exchange earnings and called on the government to prioritize its growth, diversifying the economy and reducing its reliance on oil.

A Lagos-based business executive, Chief Nzekwe also advocated the establishment of a blacksmith village in Awka to nurture youths in blacksmithing which he said is a lucrative venture.

Chief Nzekwe commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his people-oriented programmes and policies, including massive road interventions, which will boost businesses across the State.

He congratulated Governor Soludo on his emergence as Vice Chairman of the Southern Nigeria Governors’ Forum, expressing confidence in his ability to bring transformation to the region given his wealth of experiences.
