Fulanis urge Nigeria Government to protect their interests, address challenges

The Fulani community in Nigeria has called on authorities concerned to protect their interests and address the numerous challenges facing them.

The call was made at the National Fulaaku 2024 event held in Bauchi to commemorate the International Day of Indigenous People.

Organized by the Fulani Development Cooperative (FUDECO), the event highlighted the community’s struggles to survive in contemporary Nigeria.

According to group, the fulani community faces numerous challenges, including, Environmental degradation, Desertification and land degradation affecting grazing lands and livelihoods, Climate change, variations in weather patterns which impact agriculture and livestock.

Other challenges according to them are Violence, Conflicts in farming communities and security personnel attacks.

In his paper presentation during the event, Barrister Sa’adu Sungai emphasized the right of Nigerian citizens to peaceful living, citing the Constitution.
He expressed dismay over discrimination against Fulanis by some communities and hoped for a change in narrative.

Aminu Tukur, a Fulani stakeholder in Bauchi State, urged security agencies, especially the police, to address maltreatment of Fulanis.

Tukur emphasized that Fulani people are not terrorists as many people believe rather, they are Nigerians who deserve respect and protection.

In his Keynote address, Engineer Aliyu Sambo Umar, Bauchi State Chairman of FUDECO, called on the government to take concrete steps to address Fulani challenges. He urged participants to be law-abiding citizens and seek knowledge to meet global challenges.

The Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Adamu Sambo, commended the organizers of the event, describing it as timely.

He noted that the purpose of the gathering was to discuss critical issues affecting the Fulani community and find possible solutions.

The Representative of Bauchi State Police Command commended FUDECO’s movement and promised to forward their complaints to his superior for proper action.

Participants from Adamawa, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, Yobe, Kano, Kaduna, and Nasarawa states attended the event, alongside students and youth wings.

The occasion featured cultural displays and entertainment, showcasing the rich Fulani heritage.
