Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya on Wednesday, received in audience, a team from the regional office of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, (UNESCO).
The delegation, led by the Education and Partnerships Officer, UNESCO regional office, Abuja, Magdalene Aneneh- Maidoh briefed the Governor and presented to him, the end-line report of the implementation of Japan- UNESCO funded project in Gombe.
UNESCO is a specialised agency of the United Nations promoting world peace and security through international cooperation in education, arts, sciences, and culture.
The UN agency had last year inaugurated a project to empower women and girls in marginalised communities in Gombe, Bauchi and Delta states for Better well-being through education and advocacy.
The UNESCO Education and Partnerships Officer said the project, which was aimed at creating awareness and strategies on addressing the impact of COVID-19 and providing training on preventive measures to women and girls through second chance education and advocacy, had recorded tremendous success in Gombe.
She added that the project had also succeeded in increasing awareness on gender-based violence amongst young women facing marginalization.
She commended Governor Inuwa for showing political will and giving all necessary support which facilitated the smooth implementation of the programme in Gombe.
In his response, Governor Inuwa appreciated UNESCO and the government of Japan for bringing succor to the lives of the vulnerable and emphasized on the sustainability of the programme.
He assured that Gombe is ready and willing to continue to work with UNESCO and other development partners towards improving the socio-economic wellbeing of the people, especially women and children.
” This is an effort we must sustain and expand more to cover other areas, including vocational and skills development.
“There’s no limit to what we can do together to address social issues in our state. We have the vision and determination to succeed; and working together with development partners, we shall succeed in changing the negative narrative “, Governor Inuwa stressed.
The meeting was attended by the Chief of Staff, Abubakar Inuwa Kari, Special Adviser on Budget, Planning and Development Partners Coordination, Dr. Ishiyaku Mohammed as contained in a statement by Ismaila Uba Misilli, Director-General, (Press Affairs), Government House, Gombe.
