Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, representing Kaduna South Senatorial District, has launched a N100 million social and economic empowerment fund for his constituents.

The pilot scheme of the fund, tagged the “SMK Social Welfare Intervention Programme (SMK-SWIP),” was inaugurated in Kafanchan.

Speaking at the launch, Katung explained that the initiative aims to provide immediate relief and support to vulnerable constituents amid the harsh economic realities in the country.

“The hardship faced by families and individuals across Nigeria, particularly within Kaduna South Senatorial District, calls for decisive and compassionate action. It is in response to this urgent need that we have initiated this programme to provide immediate relief to our people,” he stated.

Represented by Yohanna Allahmagani, a PDP chieftain, the lawmaker announced that 400 people from the 87 wards of the senatorial district will benefit from the pilot scheme.

According to Katung, the pilot scheme will see 20 beneficiaries from each of the eight local government areas that make up the zone receive N100,000 each, while 30 others will receive N50,000 each.

He assured the people that the programme would be sustained throughout his tenure in office.

“I want to assure you that this programme is designed with sustainability in mind through the composition of a board. This is just the beginning, as we will continue to expand and enhance this initiative, adapting to the evolving needs of our community,” he added.

Mr. Christopher Haruna, Chairman of the Planning Committee, said the initiative reflects the legislator’s resolve to foster an environment where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive. Haruna urged the beneficiaries to use the funds judiciously to improve their quality of life.

Other speakers, including former lawmakers Gideon Gwani and Comfort Amwe, lauded Katung for the initiative, noting its timeliness. They called on other well-meaning individuals and organizations to emulate the lawmaker in providing succor to the downtrodden during these critical times.

Two of the beneficiaries, Phoebe Koshin and Yusuf Wayo, expressed their gratitude to Katung for his efforts to alleviate their suffering. They prayed for God’s blessings on him and the enablement to do more for the people of the area.
