INEC declares Benue governorship election inconclusive

The governorship election in Benue State has been declared inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
The Returning Officer of the state’s governorship election, Prof. Sabastine Maimako, declared the exercise inconclusive based on the fact that areas where election did not take place had a voting strength of 121, 019 while the margin between two leading candidates stood at 81, 554.
Governor Samuel Ortom who is seeking reelection on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scored a total of 410, 576 votes in 23 local government areas of the state.
But, the returning officer, Prof.  Maimako, who declared the results of the election inconclusive at 3:25pm on Monday, said that the All Progressives Congress (APC), Barrister Emmanuel Jime polled 329, 022 votes to come a distant second, followed by PRP’s candidate, Rev. Fredrick Ikyaan, who polled a total of 26, 659 votes.
The results, as announced by INEC, showed that the PDP had a total of  81, 554 votes ahead of the APC.
Daily Trust reports that the APC won in 11 LGAs while the PDP cleared 12 LGAs out of the 23 LGAs in the state.
Maimako said there were a total of 2, 480, 131 registered voters while total accredited voters stands at 816, 969.
The total valid votes was put at 790, 102 while total rejected votes were 14, 560 and total vote cast stood at 804, 662.
Meanwhile, the returning  officers of various local governments earlier reported incidences of attempt to snatch results, ballot box snatching, cancellation of results due to over voting, disruption of election process and elections not holding in some areas of the state.
At the time of this report, the PDP’s State central agent, Barrister Alex Adum, has alleged compromise by INEC.
But the Benue REC, Nentawe Yilwatda, said all grievances should be channeled to the court.
