A three-day training on youth capacity-building on drugs and substance abuse counseling and advocacy organised by Jaba Local Government Council of Kaduna State has been held.

The training was organised in conjunction with the Kaduna State Bureau for Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment (KADBUSA) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kaduna State Command.

However, speaking at the opening ceremony, Jaba Local Government Area Administrator, Hon. Mrs. Nita Byack George acknowledged the grieving dangers of drugs and substance abuse in the society and the compelling need for the menace to be tackled headlong.

She appreciated some youths who began the campaign against drugs and substance abuse-related activities in some parts of the local government area.

She, however noted such activities needed to be done in accordance with laid down laws to avoid situations where the advocates will be exposed to unnecessary danger or compromise the peace and security of the local government.

Mrs. George therefore said the training was necessitated by the need to train these advocates who were carefully selected from the ten political wards of the area on how to combat the sales and consumption of illicit drugs and substances through legal means and in line with the global-based practice on the prevention and treatment of victims of drugs and substance abuse.

The Administrator added that the participants were deliberately drawn from members of community development charters, community development associations, health personnel, councilors representing various wards and other critical stakeholders with the experts brought from KADBUSA and NDLEA.

It also included the former Director General of KADBUSA, Dr. Joseph Maigari with the sole aim of training the participants to serve as Master trainers, advocates and counselors against drug and substance abuse as they are expected to in turn step down the training to their respective wards and communities.

The Administrator re-emphasised on how passionate her administration is in the fight against the menace of drug and substance abuse by Governor of Kaduna State Uba Sani and appealed to participants and the stakeholders to support the initiative in order to deliver youths from the danger of being drawn and consumed by the the cankerworm of drug addiction.

Dr. Maigari said that the training will look at the supply and demand of drug dealings and how to go about treating each of the sides of the drug and substance abuse related activities.
