North East Commission donates starter packs to repentant Boko Haram insurgents

The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has donated starter packs as part of its contribution to support de-radicalization and rehabilitation of repentant Boko Haram and Islamic State of West Africa insurgents.
The items were donated at DRR camp of Operation Safe Corridor at the weekend at Mallam Sidi by the Managing Director and Chief Executive officer (CEO) of North East Development Commission Mohammed Goni Alkali represented by the Head of corporate services Mr. Abba Musa.

He said the donation was made to support de-radicalize and rehabilitated repentant of Boko Haram members that laid down their arms to embrace peace.
According to him, the training which include tailoring, welding, shoe making, costomology, carpentry and barbing.

The CEO said the starter pack items were distributed to 601 repentant Boko Haram members.
While calling on them to utilize the items judiciously, he said the items will serve as means of their livelihood.
Speaking at the event, the Minister Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Services, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Faruq represented by Nadiya Mohammed, emphasized the need of train and retraining the repentant of Boko Haram members who willingly surrender themselves for peace as a good initiative by President Muhammadu Buhari.
She called on them to be resolute in their day-to-day activities while leaving the camp.
On his part, the coordinator Operation Safe Corridor, Maj-Gen B.M. Shafa said the repentant Boko Haram members including foreign nationals were trained in skills acquisition programme.
Gombe State Governor, Alhaji Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya who was represented by the deputy governor, Manassah Daniel Jatau encouraged the graduands to reunite with their families and be ambassador of change to the society.
He promised that government will continue to work harmoniously with operation safe corridor to actualize the dream of the camp.
