NTDC boss advocates agenda for tourism industry recovery

The Director General, Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), Mr Folorunsho Coker has advocated for a five-point action agenda to boost the nation’s tourism industry.

Coker told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the strategic 5-point agenda was meant to innovate tourism, improved service delivery and effectiveness in critical sectors of the industry.

The director general said that the agenda would introduce the country’s tourism industry to global best practices through laws review, education and standards.

“Encourage the creation of jobs and engagement of tourism stakeholders, grow and sustain tourism assets.

“Protect and promote Nigeria’s cultural heritage as a resource for home grown socio-economic development, pursue funding for capital projects in the tourism sector,” he said.

Coker said the agenda, which had short, medium and long-term objectives, was encapsulated in Corporate Governance and Regulations, Human Capital Development, Infrastructural Development, Events and Marketing, Finance and investment (CHIEF) plan.

The NTDC boss said that the plan was aimed at promoting the nation’s domestic tourism.

Coker said that government was considering policy measures that would mitigate the effects of COVID-19 through suspension and postponement of payment of taxes and tax reductions.

He added that employment and skills measures such as income support schemes, temporary wage compensation as other  interventions that would cushion the effect of COVID-19 on the  tourism sector.

The director general also disclosed government’s plan to introduce monetary policy measures that would enhance credit guarantee to businesses and rescheduling of interest on business loans for the industry.

Coker also noted that market intelligence measures such as innovative smart tools, solutions and robust data gathering for strategic planning and monitoring of socio-economic indices, would help revamp the industry.

He added that Public Private Partnership had continued to enhance cooperation between the public and private sector as well as government’s consultations with the relevant stakeholders. (NAN)
