Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kebbi State Council, has donated relief materials and cash to 18 families of late journalists in Birnin Kebbi on Monday.

The acting Chairman of the union, Alhaji Garba Muhammad-Yeldu, said the gesture was part of the union’s annual commitment to help the families of the late members of the union in the state.

“We are yet again here to observe an annual ritual by NUJ to show love to those who have lost their loved ones in the course of servicing humanity,” he said.

He said that it was a noble course that the union was doing to help and accommodate families of the late colleagues in the state.

He also called on other journalists and the general public to lend helping hands to the families of their fallen colleagues by visiting their homes and making donations.

Muhammad-Yeldu explained that the gesture was secured by the Union from well- to-do individuals members of the society.

According to him, the decision to donate the items is to support the families at this time when the assistance is most needed because of hardship occasioned by higher cost of living.

“This will definitely go along way in cushion the effect of some of the challenges they face, especially in this period,” he said.

Also speaking, the Chief Press Secretary to Kebbi Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Idris, described the gesture as “godly deed”, especially during Ramadan period.

He said the act could help in cushioning the effect of hardship and difficulties faced by the families of the deceased in the state.

“This is highly commendable gesture. We have nothing to say but to thank you for this initiation and assistance to the families of our late members,” he said.
