NUJ raises alarm over deaths, deplorable federal roads in Cross River
By Akpan David, Calabar
The Nigeria Union of Journalists in Cross River State has lamented the very poor and deplorable Calabar-Uyo federal highway which has claimed several lives, damaged countless vehicles and wasted manhours.
In a communique issued at the end of their meeting in Calabar and signed by Comrades Victor Udu and Oka Ibor, chairman and secretary respectively, Journalists in he state appealed to the federal government to mount pressure on contractors handling the road reconstruction to expedite action and ensure timely completion to avert high rate of carnages.
Yesterday, three oil ladened tankers fell opposite the federal government owned Independent Power plant on the same federal highway, spewing out their contents. Resultantly, one of the trucks was engulfed by fire.
In the last one month, travellers and motorists have had to spend six to seven hours on a journey of one hour from Calabar to Uyo due to the virtually impassable road, giving miscreants reasons to attack innocent travellers.
However, the NUJ commended President Muhammadu Buhari for the completion of the newly constructed Ikom Bridge in Ikom Local Government Area of the state, noting that, it will reduce the plight of commuters and improve economic activities as it is a major inter and intra state evacuation corridor.
