Onitsha South Local Government in Anambra State, frustrated by ongoing encroachments on government land, has vowed to recover all fraudulently appropriated properties.
Secretary to the council, Hon. Paul Onuachalla, responded to allegations by businessman Mr. Uzoeto Sabest that the local government Chairman, Hon. Emeka Orji, demolished his N600 million business complex on Silas Works Road despite a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O).
Onuachalla stated that the land is council property, fraudulently acquired. He cited a series of warnings given to Sabest prior to the demolition.
He argued that the C of O does not validate a bad title, and presented evidence suggesting fraudulent transactions involving the land, including a purported land allocation to a private individual in 2001.
Documents allegedly show a lack of proper conveyance of title and non-disclosure to the Land Ministry, leading to the issuance of a flawed C of O.
He further alleged that Sabest purchased the land from individuals without proper documentation.
Onuachalla clarified that the legal case involving Sabest and the Chairman is between the individuals, not the local government, emphasizing that the council is simply reclaiming its property.
He urged the public to thoroughly investigate land titles, conduct due diligence, and not rely solely on registry documents.
He pointed to a similar situation on Niger Street where a market was fraudulently converted to private ownership.
The Chairman of the Woliwo Welfare Association, Mrs. Grace Anekwe, supported the local government’s action, stating that the land was originally intended for a primary health center, stressing that the importance of public benefit over private gain.
