PDP holds peaceful zonal congress in Bauchi, elects new leaders

Amidst its unending leadership crisis, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Saturday, successfully held its North East zonal Congress in what is seen as a significant milestone in the party’s preparations for the National Convention.

The event, which took place at the Dr. Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu Square, Government House, Bauchi, was attended by a multitude of delegates from the North East sub-region.

However, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar was conspicuously absent neither was a representation announced on his behalf just as non of his associates present could offer any explanation.

The Congress was witnessed by notable figures, including the Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagun, and Governors from Adamawa, Bauchi, and Taraba states.

Also, notable Members of the National Assembly including Senators Abdul Ahmed Ningi and Senator Hassan Dankwambo and others as well as former Governor of Bauchi State Ahmed Adamu Mu’azu and Others and Members of the States Assembly alongside other party stalwarts were also in attendance.

Hon. Mailantarki attended the PDP zonal Congress in Bauchi

Also, a PDP stalwart from Gombe State, Hon. Khamisu Mailantarki attended the Congress. Hon. Mailantarki was a Member of the House of Representatives who represented Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency.

Hon. Mailantarki is believed to be eyeing Gombe State governorship for the 2027 election.

In a demonstration of unity and cohesion, all 22 positions were elected unopposed, with Alhaji Babangida Modibbo Umar from Adamawa State emerging as the new Zonal Chairman of the PDP in the North East sub-region.

The Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Architect Ruben Okoya, announced the election results.

Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagun praised the success of the congress, stating that it was a testament to the party’s unity and strength.

He emphasized that similar Congresses would be held in all zones across the country, leading up to the national convention.

Alhaji Babangida Modibbo Umar, the newly elected Zonal Chairman, expressed his gratitude to the delegates and pledged to justify the confidence reposed in him as he takes over from Rev. Emmanuel Bovoa from Taraba State.

The PDP’s North East zonal Congress was part of the party’s broader efforts to reorganize and strengthen its structures ahead of the national convention.

The party has released a timetable for the 2025 zonal congresses, which includes the election of new zonal working committees and national ex-officio members.
