Former Head of State and Chairman of the National Peace Committee Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar; the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah and other members of the NPC on Thursday met with the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in last Saturday’s election, Atiku Abubakar.
The meeting which was held behind closed doors, was convened following Atiku’s decision to go to court to challenge the outcome of the presidential election which placed President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner.
Speaking at the meeting, Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar said the mission of the committee was to douse the tension that was rising in the polity over the result of the election.
It is however, not clear whether Atiku agreed to sheathe his sword as his Media Office couldn’t speak on the matter when contacted on Thursday night by our correspondent.
Atiku’s running mate, Peter Obi; Senate President Bukola Saraki; PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara and other PDP leaders were in attendance at the meeting.
Others at the meeting were Cardinal John Onaiyekan, and Rev. Fr Atta Barkindo of the NPC Secretariat.(Daily Trust)
