The President Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), Chief Emeka Obegbolu, SAN, says Nigeria’s private sector is the engine of economic opportunities.
He said businesses, particularly small businesses, flourish and can provide good jobs while government acts as a productive partner.
Chief Obegbolu made the remarks in Abuja Thursday night in a speech at his inaugural ceremony as the 12th President of the ACCI.
According to him, it is not the government but the private sector that drives the economy.
Chief Obegolu pointed out that the country is passing through some painful economic difficulties but it is Nigeria’s entrepreneurs that have the capacity and can rise to the occasion.
He said as a vital pillar in national economy and security, the Chamber is committed to the fundamental importance of working together across security spectrum to reinforce unwavering efforts of government to stem insecurity for a peaceful and environment for investment and business growth.
In this regard, the president noted that ACCI in conjunction with the security and defense leadership institute an annual summit on security, defense and business to review and proffer solutions to the challenges facing the nation.
Chief Obegbolu said an aggressive marketing of the chamber will be undertaken, with a special focus on delivering benefits to young CEOs and SME members, who constitute a good number of its members.
He said the ACCI established the Business and Human Rights Centre to promote compliance with and foster implementation of the UN Global Principles and Nigeria’s National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights.
ACCI, he said, is committed to ethical business practices and respect for human rights and has taken steps in conjunction with the National Human Rights Commission and other stakeholders to achieve compliance.
Chief Obegbolu used the occasion to acknowledge the contributions of past presidents of ACCI and staff whose selfless services to the chamber culminated in its growth.
Goodwill messages were delivered by His Highness, Igwe Augustine Oragwam, Ezeoranyelu III of Obeledu, Bangladeshi and Indian High Commissioners among others.
Part of the ceremony was the inauguration of leadership of ACCI’s Committees and Trade Groups.
