Recruit soldier cuts hand of teacher for punishing late comer student in Taraba

A newly recruited soldier Barau Ishaku who just passed out from training has severely wounded Pavalis Yebduya Joshua, a teacher with the Government Science Secondary School (GDSSS) in Taraba state on his hand and fingers and wounded students.

The teacher who is also the Examination Officer of the school was on duty this Tuesday July 2nd, 2024 at about 8:30am while the senior students were stopping late comers when a newly recruited soldier Barau Ishaku brought in a late coming student Ishak Baraya on a motor bike and refused to drop him to be punished by the seniors for coming late like the other offenders claiming that since he brought the boy no body will punish him.

Explaining his ordeals, the teacher Pavalis Joshua said as the duty master he interrupted and ordered the student to come to be punished by him but the young soldier insisted but he flocked the student four times and the soldier was infuriated came down from the machine and said that the teacher disrespected him resulting into hot arguments, after which the soldier left in anger with the promise that he will come back.

“20 minutes later he came back with two of his friends, one is a soldier and the other one is a civilian wearing army camouflage pretending to be a soldier to the school, remove jack knife chased away students while looking for me and immediately he saw me he tried stabbing me but by God’s grace I tried dodging the knife severally and finally hold him together with the knife and the knife gave me cuts on my palm and the fingers” Mr. Joshua said.

“Seeing that the students and my fellow colleagues were trooping to the scene the culprit escaped abandoning his two colleagues, my principal ran to the police station and reported the case the police sent one of the officers who came and took me to the station together with the abandoned soldiers, DSS came and took their statements and I was taken to the hospital by the police officer for treatment” he noted.

He said while in the police station the recruit went to the Special Force camp in Akate Donga and came back with a Special Force in complete uniform with a gun scaring the students as they escaped into the bush on the process two of the students got degrees of injuries while others are still missing.

Joshua lamented that even at the Police Station the soldier came with some young members of the Special Force recruits he brought out the Jack knife and said he will stab me live in the police station as witnessed by the police officers and crowd but no action was taken.

He appealed to Taraba State Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas whose Free Education Policy impacted positively to the lives of the people, the Commissioner of Education Taraba State, the DSS, the Nigerian Army, the State Commissioner of Police and all Security Agencies to look into the matter and do justice to serve as deterrence to others.

Fracas between soldiers and people particularly new recruits is becoming a serious source of concerned in Taraba State, recently there were several incidences of attack and counter attacks between soldiers and youths of Jeka-da Fari, NTA and Malam Joda areas in Jalingo the Taraba State Capital in which both the soldiers and the youth sustained Injuries, requiring the prompt attention of the State Government and the 6 Brigate of the Nigeria Army based in Jalingo to nib the problems in the bud.
