Anambra State Deputy Governor, Onyekachukwu Ibezim has disclosed that the Okpoko Urban Renewal Project is very dear to the State.
He expressed this when a team of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) paid him a courtesy visit in Awka.
The Deputy Governor restated that the present administration led by Professor Chukwuma Soludo is making effort towards making Onitsha a nice city worth living and revamping of the Okpoko slum.
Dr. Ibezim beckoned on partners and donor agencies of the Okpoko Urban Renewal Project, such as UNDP, Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) and US Agency for International Development (USAID), to sustain partnership with the State government to achieve her mandate of making Okpoko a livable city.
He further said that the massive works which include evacuation of dumps and desilting of drainages have been ongoing in Idemili North, Ogbaru, Onitsha South, and Onitsha North Local Government Areas, which is part of the government’s efforts in making the State a clean and healthy environment.
Dr. Ibezim, accompanied by the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Felix Odimegwu had earlier visited and assessed the spot at Alex Ekwueme Square, where erosion is threatening the olympic size swimming pool used during the Nigerian Police Games .
Operations Manager of United Nations Development Programme, Mrs. Fati Attahiru, expressed that the visit was to see how the United Nations can support the State government in terms of environmental challenges and assisting her in achieving promises that have been made to various communities in the State.
Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Felix Odimegwu, assured that the State government will act with immediate effect to see that the erosion is controlled.
