Tragedy struck at Number 2 Umudioka Street Ngbuka Nkpor, Idemili North Council Area of Anambra State where a man, James Nworah killed his wife early Tuesday with a pestle.
When Apex News arrived the compound, a three-storey building where the couple are living at the ground floor, people were seen standing in groups discussing the incident.
From their discussions, it was gathered that the couple who have five children, three boys and two girls, recently packed into the building.
Some of the sympathizers who spoke to our correspondent including Messrs Emeka Okafor, Chinedu Offorjeli and Celina Nwumeh disclosed that the man, from Izzi in Abakiliki, Ebonyi State, is alleged to be mentally unstable and was once a commercial motorcyclist, affected by the recent Okada ban in Anambra State.
They maintained that the couple were living peacefully and were into pap making business and that the incident happened at about 2am when they have finished sieving the pap they would sell the following day.
According to them, the wife, Jennifer went to sleep when the husband came in and hit her on the head with a pestle.
It was also gathered that the man called his brother and told him that he killed his wife before he was arrested by the police.
Our correspondent also saw their children where they were kept with neighbours and one of them Master Peter said they were asleep when the incident happened and did not know what really transpired.
Meanwhile, James is in custody at Ogidi Police Station where the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Mark Ijarafu confirmed the incident adding that the man would be taken to the State CID.
Reacting to the development, the Chairman Nigerian Red Cross Society Idemili North chapter, Engineer Uchenna Tagbo decried the rate at which this kind of crime is perpetrated in Nigeria, stressing the need for people to be prayerful and reorder their mindsets.
