The Society for Family Health (SFH) has impacted 22,341 households in Nasarawa State through Phase 3 of the WASH for Healthy Lives (W4HL) Project.

SFH Project Director, W4HL, Mrs Jane Adizue, disclosed this during the State Central Dissemination Meeting(SCDM) with stakeholders from relevant ministries, departments, and agencies in Lafia.

She said that SFH had executed the W4HL Project in Obi, Karu, and Nasarawa Local Government Areas (LGAs), in the state.

Adizue added that SFH had also conducted 478 sensitisation sessions across 20 communities and 10 schools.

According to her, SFH carried out 301 advocacy activities and registered 76 service delivery points, including general stores and pharmacies, supplying them with Procter & Gamble (P&G) water purification products.

Adizue further stated that SFH successfully distributed 1,446,783 P&G sachets, benefiting 75,073 individuals.

She revealed plans to expand Phase 4 of the project to Toto LGA, with a focus on WASH emergency response and infrastructure development, including drilling boreholes to provide safe water.

She explained that the SCDM was organised to highlight key lessons from Phase 3 implementation, including successes, challenges, and innovative approaches.

Adizue noted that the intervention had led to an increase in water treatment using household chemical treatments like P&G, improved handwashing practices, and a significant reduction in open defecation habits.

“WASH simply means Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene, and our intervention has been ongoing in Nasarawa State since 2022.

“We felt it was necessary to hold this dissemination meeting to showcase our impact over the past two years and gather stakeholder feedback for further improvements.

“The benefiting communities have not experienced any outbreaks of waterborne diseases, and we commend the state government for being instrumental in the success of this project,” she said.

Mr Richard Pheelagwa, Permanent Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, was represented by Harira Abubakar.

He described the WASH project as highly impactful, noting that beneficiaries were now taking responsibility for their hygiene behaviours.

“The Society for Family Health has been collaborating with the Ministry for the past three years to implement WASH for Healthy Lives in Edo and Nasarawa State,” he said.

Several stakeholders at the event applauded SFH’s efforts and pledged their continued support.

Among them were, Mr Muluku Aga, Commissioner for Water Resources, Dr Ahmed Kana, General Manager, Nasarawa State Water Board, and Dr John Damina, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health.

Also in attendance were, Mr Rosha Garba, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Dr Ibrahim Alhassan, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Sports and Youth Development.

The SFH has been implementing the WASH for Healthy Lives Project in Nasarawa State since 2022, with support from P&G.
