Taraba Governor Kefas flags-off free fertilizer distribution to farmers

Taraba state Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas has flagged off the distribution of free fertilizer to farmers across.

performing the ceremony in Jalingo, Dr. Kefas disclosed that this marked another bold step by the administration to support farmers and revolutionize the agricultural sector.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, Governor Kefas emphasized that the initiative was designed to open up more land for farming, improve input supply, support cooperative farmers, and attract investors to the agricultural value chain.

“We are taking another bold step in supporting our farmers with free fertilizer,” the governor said. “This program is part of our wider plan to redefine farming and make this season highly productive.”

He commended the Emir of Muri for his consistent support and integrity, noting that the traditional ruler personally took him on a tour of his farm, providing him the opportunity to see the reality on the ground.

Governor Kefas further revealed that a bill would soon be sent to the Taraba State House of Assembly to establish the Taraba Initiative for Farmland and Forest Occupation, which will be headed by the Emir of Muri. The initiative aims to broaden the scope of assignments given to traditional leaders in ensuring proper land utilization and forest conservation.

The governor called on farmers to take full advantage of the free input distribution and use it responsibly for maximum output.

In his welcome address, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Professor Nicholas Oliver Namessan, highlighted the achievements of the administration in the agricultural sector since May 2023.

According to him, key milestones include the remodeling of the Jalingo Green House and Abattoir, procurement and distribution of assorted farm inputs, and the prompt fulfillment of counterpart obligations for World Bank-assisted projects.

He also announced that fifty youths from Taraba will soon be sent to India for specialized training in seed development, a move expected to boost local capacity and agricultural innovation in the state.

The event featured goodwill messages from the Emir of Muri, the Chairman of the Rice Farmers Association, Alhaji Tanko Bobbo, representatives of women in farming, and other stakeholders who lauded the governor’s commitment to agriculture.
