The end to the crisis rocking the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is at sight as the Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum has agreed to step aside paving way for the holding of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for October 24, 2024.

Damagum stepping down followed a meeting of PDP governors on Tuesday 15th of October 2024 in Akure, Ondo State and would pave way for the selection of a Substantive National Chairman from the North-Central Geo-Political Zone to lead the Party up to December, 2025 to complete the tenure of Senator Iyorchia Ayu.

In fact, the meeting was held on the eve of the official flag-off of the PDP governorship campaign rally for Ondo State.

The governors agreed that Damagum would remain in his present role until the next NEC meeting of 24th October 2024, during which the North-Central’s nomination for the substantive position will be ratified, and possible dates for a national convention will also be discussed.

By the provisions of the PDP Constitution, the North-Central Geo-Political Zone should nominate their candidate for the consideration of NEC, for the portfolio of the substantive National Chairman of the Party.

Even before Damagum agreed to step aside, the then Acting National Chairman of the Party, Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed, the current PDP National Treasurer, had demonstrated quality leadership by insisting that the North-Central Geo-Political Zone is to produce the Substantive National Chairman.

Before now, the PDP Governors’ Forum headed by Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed was divided on Damagum’s status, but are now united that he vacates the acting position for the progress of the Party.

As a result of all these developments, the PDP National Network of Very Concerned Stakeholders, has urged the leadership of the North-Central PDP to ensure the best candidate is brought forward from those that have indicated their interests to occupy the office of the PDP National Chairman.

The Network noted that this is an opportunity for the Critical Stakeholders from the North Central GeoPolitical Zone not to take to chance, but to choose a person with a strong and exceptional character that will be acceptable to all.

It pointed out that the Critical Stakeholders in the PDP North Central GeoPolitical Zone should therefore consider the following criteria in selecting their best candidate that would be acceptable to the PDP-NEC, PDP-National Caucus, PDP-BoT and the PDP Governors’ Forum, the Network stressed.

These criteria include being neutral and non-aligned with any of the three Power Blocs in PDP, must have a sound knowledge of the history of the party and must have sufficient political and/or party administrative experience.

Besides, the candidate must have clean integrity, without any blemish or scandal that could embarrass the party in future; must be of high leadership capacity with verifiable commitment and contributions to the party formation and its growth.

Furthermore, they said such candidate must have the courage to enforce the party Constitution when need arises, must be a personality of calmness and maturity in withstanding tensions and pressures from all angles.

Also, the right candidate must have good records of past performance in private sector and/or public sector services and possesses adequate educational and/or professional qualifications.

The Network also advised the PDP Governors’ Forum to apply similar important criteria in their final support for the chosen candidate.

“It should be noted that the incoming PDP substantive National Chairman of North-Central Geo-Political extraction, is coming to carry out the enormous tasks of reconciliation and re-building of the party that is already battered and must therefore possess the necessary charisma and the moral authority to discharge such sensitive assignments,” it noted.

It warned the PDP North Central Zonal leadership not to make a wrong choice of candidate as it will return the PDP back to the dirty crises and could lead to its eventual demise and called on the PDP North- Central stakeholders to select wisely.

Going by these criteria, Dr. Phillips Omeiza Salawu is the best candidate for the position as the Substantive National Chairman of the PDP.
