Forbidden Love, New York, Harlem, 1969-70. Cole took this photograph of two men kissing in the entrance to a subway stop in Manhattan at the time of the Stonewall riots. The Magnum photographer was born in Pretoria in 1940 and died of cancer aged 49. His 1967 book, House of Bondage, exposed the terrible injustices of apartheid in his homeland, and was banned there.
