The Embassy of the United States in Nigeria has expressed deep concern by the impact of the executive arm’s decision to suspend and replace the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Walter Onnoghen.
In a statement in Abuja emailed to Apex News Saturday, the Embassy expressed worry over the action without the support of the legislative branch on the eve of national and state elections.
The Embassy in the statement, noted the widespread Nigerian criticism that the decision was unconstitutional and that it undermined the independence of the judicial branch.
According to the statement, that undercuts the stated determination of government, candidates, and political party leaders to ensure that the elections proceed in a way that is free, fair, transparent, and peaceful – leading to a credible result.
It urged that the issues raised by the decision be resolved swiftly and peacefully in accordance with due process, full respect for the rule of law, and the spirit of the Constitution of Nigeria pointing out that such action was needed urgently now to ensure that the decision does not cast a pall over the electoral process.
