World Bank expresses fear over grievous danger of bush burning in Nasarawa

Agro-climate Resilience in Semi Arid Landscapes, (ACReSAL(, a World Bank-financed project designed to fight against land degradation and climate in Lafia, Doma and Toto local government areas of Nasarawa state.

ACReSAL. while embarking on aggressive campaign sensitization and awareness against bush burning and its effect, warned the citizens of the state to desist from unnecessary bush burning in their communities.

The state coordinator of ACReSAL Nasarawa, Dr. Napoleon Gyobe-Elias, who handed the warning while addressing residents of the affected communities across three local government areas,
explaining that land degradation, elimination of wild life and destruction of the ecosystem which is affecting food productions are some of the effect of bush burning.

His words, “We stop bush burning because of the huge side effects on our ecosystem, food production. Every time dry bushes are burnt, we lose plants and animals and forest. The consequences is climate change.”

While appealing to the residents of Lafia, and Doma local government areas of the state, Dr. Napoleon urged them to protect the forest and the soil by planting more trees.

He, however, expressed deep concern that bush burning has caused havocs on tree planting program and raised the alarm over the grievous danger of bush burning on the climate and agricultural activities in the state.

He, therefore, cautioned rural dwellers and farmers to avoid bush burning and engage in tree planting to mitigate the grievous danger of climate change.

Earlier, the permanent secretary, state ministry of environment and natural resources, Dr. Garba Rosha-Mohammed, commended ACReSAL for championing the campaign against bush burning in the state.

Rosha Mohammed who noted that bush burning has caused huge damage to farmers and wel as the environment, appealed to residents in the rural areas to shun bush burning as the dey season dips.

He assured ACReSAL team who paid him visit while embarking on the aggressive campaign against bush burning that the state government will provide all the necessary support to ensure the campaign achieves it objectives.

ACReSAL Program coordinator said the campaign will continue across the state.
