Zac tax campaign relaunch to boost financial administration, discipline in Church

As part of the new International Financial and Economic Architecture initiative, the Zacheaus Tax campaign has been relaunched for financial discipline in the Church. 

The relaunch was held on 20th May 2023, where 33 participants cutting across African countries were Commissioned to go and take the campaign to their various countries. 

The relaunch of the Zacchaeus Tax campaign which was held in South Africa was organized by the Dutch Reformed Church in Southern Africa and co-organized by the All African Conference of Churches, Council for World Mission, Lutheran World Federation, World Community of Reformed churches, World Methodist Council and World Council of Churches. 

According to the National Secretary of Women Wing of Christian Council of Nigeria (WOWICCN), Dr (Mrs.) Mercy John, amongst those who attended the conference, it was done to update the Church on the new ways of financial administration and discipline in the Church. 

While speaking with Journalists in Bauchi on Thursday, She said that, “I have been powerfully equipped, informed, inspired, and strengthened to carryout the task to organizations, Churches, Schools and to other places as the case may be.” 

According to her, “We brought out some priorities on Zac Tax such as:Tax innovation 6 Tax avoidance, Tax inceptives, Taxation of Multinationals, Domestic Resource Mobilization, Provision of Basic Services and Wealth Taxation.”

Others issues discussed during the 3-day Conference was Illicit Financial Flows and Cross cutting issues related to tax justice such as tax gender and taxation of natural resources. 

Mercy John added that Strategy to Deepening the campaign of Zac Tax was evolved and agreed by the participants to include creating high capacity levels and Understand the two levels of the target audience- technical and communities. 

Also discussed was how to relaunch the tools kit, Create more awareness on the campaign and Develop simplified materials on tax Justice.

The WOWICCN National Secretary said that the Conference was indeed a worthwhile as it opened up a lot ways the Church particularly can improve on its financial administration in order to keep above board. 

She then assured that as mandated, a step-down conference will be organised in order to keep the local Church in Nigeria abreast of the modern method of financial administration.
