Ikem resigns as Cross River PDP Chairman, cites leadership crisis
By Akpan David, Calabar
Venatius Ikem, chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing internal divisions and a crisis of leadership direction.
In a resignation letter addressed to the party’s national and state secretaries, Ikem said his decision followed a careful assessment of the party’s internal dynamics and his inability to effectively discharge his responsibilities amid growing divisions.
He said the party was grappling with a crisis of direction and leadership coherence, warning that the situation could undermine its effectiveness, particularly as it approaches a critical electoral season.
Ikem said divergent positions among party leaders had weakened the PDP’s ability to pursue a united course, adding that the challenges could erode the sacrifices and aspirations of loyal members if left unresolved.
The former chairman, who said he had served the party for five years, described his resignation as a difficult decision reached after deep reflection on the prevailing realities within the party.
He expressed appreciation to party leaders who supported him during his tenure, particularly Senators Sandy Onor and Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe.
Ikem also acknowledged the contributions of the PDP’s national leader, Nyesom Wike, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve the party.
He thanked his supporters across Cross River State, particularly in Obudu, his immediate constituency, for their loyalty and support over the years.
Despite his resignation, Ikem said he remained committed to the progress and development of Cross River State and Nigeria, while wishing the PDP success in its future endeavours.
