The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two men and recovered a six-round English-made pistol during a stop-and-search operation in Nnewi North Local Government Area of the state.
The suspects, identified as 33-year-old Ekwulugo Chiemierie Joseph and 29-year-old Enyiobi Geoffrey Somtochukwu, were arrested on Saturday evening, September 26, 2026, by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Nnewi Sector, and the Police Mobile Force, PMF 54.
According to a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, the operatives were conducting visibility patrols within the Nnewi metropolis when they stopped the suspects, who were riding on a Tiger 150 motorcycle without a registration number.
A search of the motorcycle led to the recovery of the pistol, after which both men were taken into police custody and are assisting investigators with the ongoing investigation.
The police said investigators were working to establish how the suspects came into possession of the firearm, where it was obtained and its intended use.
The Command added that other circumstances surrounding the recovery were also being investigated to determine whether the suspects had any links to other criminal activities.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, said the recovery underscored the importance of police visibility and coordinated stop-and-search operations in preventing crime.
Ama said such operations formed part of the Command’s intelligence-led and community-based policing strategy, particularly in detecting and disrupting the movement of firearms and other dangerous weapons that could be used to facilitate violent crimes.
The commissioner assured residents of Nnewi and other parts of Anambra that the Command would continue to sustain proactive patrols, intelligence-led operations and strategic stop-and-search activities across the state.
He also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly provide the police with credible information about suspicious persons, movements or activities in their communities.
The Command thanked Ndi Anambra for their continued cooperation and reaffirmed its commitment to working with residents to maintain peace and security across the state.
