As many as 1000 female students from some secondary schools in Calabar have been given menstrual pads.

They have been tutored by experienced women, medical and care-giving experts on what menstruation is, what age girl children do begin to experience it and how to handle it.

The event was held to commemorate this year’s World Menstrual Day.

Speaking on the topic, ‘Myths and Misconception of Menstruation and Menstrual Hygiene’ during the event held at Bromco school, Branch Health Coordinator of Nigeria Red Cross Society in the State, Mrs. Gertrude Usani reminded the students on the need to eschew the stigma behind menstrual health and appreciate the benefits as a woman.

She advised the girl students not to be scared when they begin to experience it.

Another medical expert, Nurse Fullness Mathew educated the students on the Benefits, Challenges and Health measures” associated with Menstrual Hygiene.

She cautioned the girl child on the early management of their menstrual cycle from puberty, thereby maintaining proper disposal of menstrual products before and after use.

She also disclosed that some challenges behind Menstrual Hygiene include: Cultural taboos, Myths and beliefs, embarrassment and anxiety, and lack of timely sensitization among others.

Principal of Brotherhood Model College which partnered NRCS, Tari Pujeh said it was important to sensitize, assist and educate the girl child and women on menstrual health and hygiene.

She appealed that the stigma associated with menstrual health and hygiene should be done away with.

“It is important for the society to debunk the stigma but to jointly educate and support the girl children on their menstruation.   This is why we have supported girl children in our school and other schools with at least 1000 pads”, she said.
