Nafisa on a dialysis machine
By Yakubu Ahmed-BK (Maibindiga)
Nafisa Haruna, a 20 year old resident of Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State was to be married early February 2020 when she suddenly took ill early December. Tests were run and she was, sadly diagnosed with an end stage renal disease.
She was thereafter put on dialysis at the Specialist Hospital, Sokoto. Since then, all the parents had labored for had gone into the weekly dialysis. Doctors have concluded that she is to survive only on either regular maintenance haemodialysis (three times per week) or have a renal transplant.
In a letter requesting for assistance jointly written and signed on behalf of the patient by Professor Mohammad A. Makusidi, a Consultant Physician and Nephrologist and Dr. Aniugwu Victor Medical Officer in charge of Nephrology Unit of the Specialist Hospital Sokoto, Nafisa will require the sum of N150,000 weekly for the three rounds of dialysis to keep her alive.
In the alternative, the letter said, a renal transplant will cost a total of N8,000,000 if no donor is sourced. Luckily for Nafisa, one of her brothers has offered to donate one of his kidneys and this will cost N3.5M.
In the meantime, Nafisa is currently bedridden in the hospital and has not received any dialysis for upward of two weeks now because of paucity of funds. I visited her in the hospital and while leaving, I overheard her crying profusely to her mother telling her “Mama kar ku barni in mutu, don Allah kuyi wani abu” meaning “Mother, don’t let me die, please do something.” I watched the mother, looking back at her daughter helplessly amidst sobs. It brought a tear out me as well.
WHAT CAN WE DO?
To stabilize Nafisa, we need to raise some money to pay for her dialysis. This will, In Shaa Allah keep her alive. By this, we will buy the time to see how we can raise the N3.5M required for the transplant since her brother has offered to donate his kidney. It may appear to be a tall order, but can we afford to sit askance and watch this girl die without making efforts to help?
Nafisa and her mother are currently at the Specialist Hospital, Sokoto and can be reached on these numbers:-
