Governor Ben Ayade
By Akpan David, Calabar
Over two years ago, there were lingering rumours regarding possible defection of Governor Ben Ayade to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Many APC bigwigs were in out of Cross River State all in a bid to convince Ayade to cross over to APC to no avail.
Finally, the six APC governors that succeeded in sealing the deal are those of Ekiti, Kayode Fayemi, Jigawa (Mohammed Badaru), Yobe (Mai Bala Buni), Kebbi (Abubakar Atiku Babadu), Imo (Hope Uzodinma) and Plateau (Simon Lalong) as well as the minister of state for petroleum, Sylva Timipre.
National caretaker chairman of the party and Governor of Yobe State, Bala Buni said they are happy to welcome Gov Ayade, adding that he will be better off with his decision.
Ayade himself said that it is a hard decision and the responsibility is enormous for him but nevertheless he has taken the state out of poverty of opposition.
Ayade gave reasons why he had to decamp the national ruling party, All Progressives Congress.
He also called on other PDP governors in the South South Nigeria to join him in the APC.
He said there is dire need for him and other governors to work closely with President Muhammadu Buhari.
He said there is also dire need to bring the state into the centre not to play opposition.
Hear him “We need to join hands with President Buhari in his determination to enhance the fortunes of the county.
“I need all governors to similarly join me and understand my decision to join the APC.
“We need to work ahead with the president for the future and unity of Nigeria.
We all need to sit on same dining table with Mr Presidential to save Nigeria.
“It is my responsibility to being back Cross River to the centre in order to enhance her fortunes.
“I therefore formally declare myself as member and leader of APC in Cross River State”.
