No fewer than 69 persons were arrested for violation of environmental law during this month’s sanitation exercise in Nasarawa State.

Mr Yakubu Kwanta, the state Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources disclosed this when speaking with newsmen during the exercise in Lafia.

The Commissioner said the total of 69 arrested persons were majorly motorists, tricycle and motorcycle riders cuts across local government areas of the state.

According to him, the state had adopted new strategy for effective monitoring of the exercise by constituting special inspecting team who appear as ordinary people to observe the sanitation teams sent to various places to monitor the exercise.

The commissioner who was represented by Chief Environmental Officer of the Ministry, Abubakar Mohammed said the special inspecting team became necessary to fish out saboteurs in the exercise.

He warned various sanitation teams against sabotaging effort of the state government to keep the state clean, noted that anybody found wanting of insubordination would be dealt with decisively according to the civil service rule.

Kwanta, however, said the exercise recorded 80 per cent compliance in the state.

“We have sent special inspecting team to various places to observe the activities of the sanitation teams, and this people will just appear like ordinary people to monitor their activities and bring feed back.

“That is the strategy have adopted this time around, from all indications there’s a great improvement in Lafia, I can assure you we have 80 per cent compliance,” he said.
