99 players kick off scrabble event at the 8th National Youth Games in Asaba

Scrabble event has at the 8th National Youth Games commenced on Saturday, September 14, at the Multi Purpose Indoor Sports Hall of the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Delta State with a record entry of 99 players from 21 states.

Going by the attendance, the number is an improvement over the 7th edition of the games which recorded 70 players from 17 states.

The players will be competing for honours in Boys and Girls Doubles; Boys’ and Girls’ Singles and the Team Event for boys and girls, all of which will run for three days.

The President of Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF), Engineer Toke Aka informed that most of the players are well known enthused that the young wordsmiths in Asaba are the future of the game of words not only for Nigeria but for the world.

“The NSF will continue to open up the space for the game of scrabble to blossom, by reaching out to schools where we can catch them young,” Aka said.

“We know most of the youngsters in attendance, we also know what they can bring to the board, however there will be lots of upsets as new faces are ready to show their word power, tactical play, board management, mental strength and as well as their dexterity on the board,” Engineer Aka added.
