Breakthrough Action Nigeria transports over 3815 clients to health facilities for ANC, delivery, others in Bauchi

In its efforts to ensure safe delivery of pregnant women in Bauchi state, a USAID implementing partner, Breakthrough Action Nigeria was able to facilitate the transportation of 3815 clients comprising 1366 for ANC, 789 for delivery, 966 for under five, and 964 other illnesses by 68 WDCs across 11 LGAs within the second quarter of FY2023 the Integrated Health Programme IHP operation in Bauchi state.
The disclosure was contained in a presentation by Breakthrough Action Nigeria during the IHP pause and reflect learning session meeting held on Thursday in Bauchi to review the operations of the second quarter of the FY 2023 in order to know the progresses, challenges and action points moving forward.
While making the presentation, Breakthrough Action Nigeria Programme Officer, Emalda J. Musa disclosed that during the period under review, there was tracking and line-listing of pregnant women in 35 BA-TA wards across intervention LGAs, 421 emergency transportation of pregnant women, under 5 children, and other sick clients across the 68 BA-TA wards while there was ward development committees (WDCs) across 11 intervention LGAs using town announcers and other avenues to sensitize Community members on different health issues.
She added that a total number of 1959 pregnant women were tracked with the support of female WDC members, and they were all referred for ANC and delivery services with the figure for ANC showing 1160 while that of deliveries was 799.
Also, 2747 community members were sensitized during the quarter under review across the 35 WDCs on Cholera, TB, yellow and Lassa fever prevention, COVID-19 vaccination, and COVID-19 preventive measures and outreach sessions in the various communities in 4 LGAs of Dambam, Dass, Jama’are, Warji LGs which were selected involving 55 wards by the SPHCDA based on the agreed selection criteria and scorecards.
The activities and achievements during the period under review according to her included Strengthening of Interpersonal Communications and Counselling (IPCC) capacity among providers, Peer-to-peer supportive engagement and social networking on Respectful Maternity Care (RMC), Malaria in Pregnancy (MiP), and Fever Case Management (FCM) as well as On-site Joint Mentoring and Supportive Supervision on MNCH +N and Fever Case Management.
Breakthrough Action-Nigeria also Collaborated with other implementing partners (IPs) and relevant state agencies to facilitate the adaptation of the IPCC module into the revised curriculum of the schools of Nursing and Midwifery in the North-East geopolitical zone as well as Trained 66 Nursing and midwifery tutors and Educators to facilitate the domestication of the revised curriculum in their respective institutions.
It also Strengthened the capacity of the state to meet the pre service requirements for the training of its Human Resource for Health in the 6 schools of Nursing and Midwifery, In collaboration with BACATMA & BSPHCDA, trained 11 LGA facilitators on Malaria in Pregnancy while also in collaboration with BACATMA & BASPHCDA conducted 11 MiP cluster meetings in 11 LGAs with 189 service providers.
BA-N also supported 78 service providers to improve IPTp documentation in the state, On-site Joint Mentoring & Supportive Supervision, 7 PHCs mentored On-site Joint Mentoring and Supportive Supervision on MNCH +N and Fever demonstrated improvement.
Furthermore, 23 State and LGA SBC-ACGs conducted joint community sensitization sessions in 19 different communities with CVs/LGS to argument referrals made and completed across 11 LGAs. Reaching out to 1801 audiences, of which 387 clients were referred and 321 completed the referrals, Supported SBC-ACG members to mentor and nurture other religious leaders and influencers on priority health behaviors, and social and gender norms Midsession review meeting conducted.
BA-N also Conducted quarterly work plan review meetings with state SBC-ACGs to track activity implementation level, identify gaps and challenges, and proffer solutions while at the State and LGA level, the audience reached was 2,788,690 out of which 1,233,123 were males and 1,555,567 were females. The significance increased can be attributed to the live radio discussion programs conducted across the state and community radio stations coupled with the outreaches conducted in the hinterlands, compared to the previous quarter with a cumulative estimate of about 1 million.
The mentors and mentees have conducted a total of 27 sessions out of which 6 were theoretical while the remaining 21 were practical sessions in the communities during Ta’alim, Islamiyya schools on Fridays and Sundays, reaching out to over 4000 followers and other community resource groups such as the women for women international, health facility visits during sessions, etc. with key health messages.
It then developed Work plan for the next 6 months while 89 SBC-ACG conducted 70 health facility visits in 11 LGAs during ANC (integrated sessions) to encourage complete ANC, Health facility delivery, and spousal communication to improve joint decision-making in health. Reached out to 8280 clients with priority messages.
