The Coalition for Democratic Right, a group, has expressed concern and disappointment regarding the recent judgment of the Kano State Gubernatorial Election Petition Tribunal in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC) against the New Nigeria People’s P,arty (NNPP)
The ruling sacked the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of NNPP and will usher in Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna of APC as duly elected Governor of Kano State
Reacting to the development, Ibrahim Babayo, Director of Strategic Communications of the Coalition, argued that the judgement has raised serious questions about respect for people’s mandate during a contested electoral process and rape of the principles of democracy.
According to him, “The democratic process is the cornerstone of our nation, and it is imperative that every citizen’s vote is treated with respect and fairness.”
He added that, “Any allegations of misconduct or irregularities during elections must be thoroughly investigated and addressed through a transparent and impartial judicial system.”
Ibrahim Babayo further stated that, “The Kano State Gubernatorial Election Petition Tribunal’s role in ensuring justice and upholding the rule of law is of paramount importance.”
“We call upon all stakeholders, including the judiciary, the electoral commission, political parties, and the public, to display the highest level of integrity, fairness, and adherence to the rule of law in discharging their constitutional responsibilities,” he added.
He also stated that, “The credibility of our democratic institutions hinges on their ability to operate without bias or prejudice.”
Ibrahim Babayo added that, ‘As the all respondent file and appeal and are currently awaiting hearing, we urge the appealate court to conduct a thorough review of the Kano State Gubernatorial Election Petition Tribunal’s judgment to ascertain its fairness and adherence to due process.”
He also stated that, “It is essential that the masses have faith in the electoral process, and this can only be achieved through transparency, accountability, and a commitment to justice.”
“We also implore all political actors and parties to respect the rule of law and refrain from any actions that may incite violence or undermine the peace and stability of our great nation,” he added.
He concluded stating that, “In conclusion, we emphasize the need for all stakeholders to discharge their constitutional responsibilities with a deep sense of justice and a fear of God.”
“Our democracy thrives when it is built on the principles of fairness, accountability, and transparency. We remain committed to upholding these principles and ensuring that the voice of the people is heard and respected,” he added.
