Leveraging technology to improve lives of LGBT in Nigeria
By Akanji Alowoludo, Bauchi
It has been observed that the impact of technology on daily lives is undeniable, revolutionizing the way people connect and communicate with one another.
It was also observed n Nigeria, where over 31.6 billion citizens actively use various social media platforms daily and with 122 million active internet users, the role of technology in fostering connections is more apparent than ever.
The assertion was made by Mike Deamon, an App developer who stated that LGBTIQ+ individuals are no exception, as many in the community have turned to social media as a means to establish vital connections with like-minded peers.
He however observed that, the online world is not without its perils, as it often exposes them to hostility, harassment, entrapment, and homophobic attacks, both in digital spaces and the physical realm.
According to him, “In a country where same-sex relationships are criminalized, LGBTIQ+ individuals grapple with various forms of attacks and human rights violations. Homophobes lurk in online spaces, attempting to harm LGBTIQ+ individuals by luring them to dangerous locations.”
“Despite these dangers, online platforms remain the primary means for LGBTIQ+ people in Nigeria to connect with others who share their experiences—a crucial element of their mental health and overall well-being,” he stressed.
In order to address these pressing issues, the establishment of virtual safe spaces has become a critical need, with Qtalk emerging as a solution,” he stressed.
Qtalk, a social and counseling app exclusively developed by and for the LGBTIQ+ community in Nigeria, currently serves over 2,000 LGBTIQ+ Nigerians as it offers them free psychosocial and legal support from qualified Lawyers, Doctors, and therapists.
Even more so, Qtalk has evolved into a secure haven where LGBTIQ+ Nigerians can engage in meaningful conversations and establish healthy relationships.
Originally launched in 2019 by NoStrings Development Initiatives, an LGBTIQ+-led human rights organization in Nigeria, the app was initially available only on Android.
However, the app’s positive reception and impact necessitated expansion, leading to its availability on iOS devices, a milestone achieved in September this year.
Mike Daemon, a Nigerian Journalist and podcaster, and the Executive Director of NoStrings Development Initiatives, commented on the app’s relaunch with both Android and iOS versions now available, expressing his aspirations and gratitude.
He stated that, “To me, this is more than just an app or an initiative. This is a dream come true. With the number of successes we have recorded so far since our first launch in 2019, I can freely say that this is truly life-saving.”
He also stated that, “My sincere hope now is that we are able to build on these successes and continue to provide my community with the support that it sure deserves. I am truly grateful for the opportunity and look forward to collaborating with people who believe in this dream.”
He concluded stating that, for those interested in downloading the app, it can be accessed at: https://qtalkonline.com”
