United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) has been commended for taking the lead in the campaign against cervical cancer in women of reproductive age through the introduction of the Human Papillomavirus vaccine.
The commendation was made by the Caretaker Chairman of Toro LGA of Bauchi State, Comrade Danlami Garba Tashan Durumi while speaking to Journalists in his office during an assessment tour of the ongoing vaccination of girls aged 9-14 in Toro LGA.
He said that without UNICEF taking the lead of other development partners, the campaign would have been a difficult one considering the economic situation of the country.
Danlami Garba particularly commemded UNICEF for training community volunteers such as Mama2mama members, Volunteer Community mobilizers (VCM), Behavioural Community Mobilixers (BCM) who have being going round from house to house to mobilize people for the vaccination.
According to him, “The importance of these group of people cannot be overemphasised in the success of the campaign because they are the real frontline workers whose contribution to the success of the programme is emmemse”
The Caretaker Chairman however made a strong case for the upward review of the allowances of the volunteers stressing that the present economic situation in the country demands that they got a little higher than what they are getting now.
He stressed that there are villages in the LGA that can only be accessed by motorcycle which they must pay for from the meagre amount given to them.
Garba Danlami then expressed optimism that the target of girls to be vaccinated in the LGA will be met stressing that due to the effective mobilization made by the volunteers, the level of response and compliance is very high.
Also speaking on the vaccination exercise, the Director, Primary Healthcare of the LGA, Rahmatu Isiyaku Ningi said that, “My assessment from the day we started up to today, I can understand that people are accepting the vaccines very well.”
According to her, “Because they received a lot of sensitisation from the resource groups we have within the LGA, the UNICEF community mobilizers worked in the Churches, from the Imams and thank God they are accepting the vaccines as they have been enlightened on the importance of the vaccines and the dangers associated with cervical cancer.”
The Director PHC added that,”People are happy to receive the vaccine and in fact they are even demanding for it. If it didn’t reach them, they are coming to where the vaccination is taking place.”
“My message is to thank the government and UNICEF on the issue of the vaccines given to us because there is no where you can get these vaccines unless you collaborate with the government,” She added.
