Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State
By Linus Ogbu, Lafia
The Nasarawa State Governor, Engineer Abdullahi Sule has called on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its supporters in the state to desist from blackmailing the judiciary over the Appeal Court judgement that affirmed his reelection.
This was contained in a statement by Peter Ahemba, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Governor Sule on Public Affairs on Monday in Lafia.
The reaction followed the recent protest in Lafia against the Appeal Court governorship election judgment by a group purported to be coalition of indigenous people of Nasarawa State.
It will be recalled that the appellate court had on November, 23rd, voided the verdict of the Nasarawa State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which declared Dr Emmanuel Ombugadu of Peoples Democratic Party as winner against Governor Sule of All Progressives Congress.
“We watched with great concern, another shameful outing by a group of individuals believed to have been hired by the opposition, PDP in Nasarawa State to stage an unwarranted protest against the recent verdict of the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja.
“Which rightly set aside the split judgement of the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in the state and affirmed Governor Sule as the lawfully elected Governor of the State.
“The call on the International Community to intervene in the internal affairs of the state and tagging of some ethnic groups as foreigners is laughable and has further exposed the opposition PDP of its ethnic agenda in the politics of Nasarawa state,” he said.
Ahemba added that the decision of the Appeal Court was a true reflection of the popular mandate freely given to the governor by the electorates on March 18.
He explained that the government have confidence in the judiciary and believed that justice would be served at the Supreme Court.
He advised PDP and its candidate to challenge the outcome of the appeal court rather than bending on taking power through back door, noting that when the PDP was declared winner at the tribunal nobody protested, the governor rather challenged the decision at the appeal court.
“The recent stage-managed protest against the Appeal Court judgement by a group of sponsored individuals is a calculated attempt to discredit the courageous, sound and firm judgement of the Appeal Court.
“It also meant to blackmail the nation’s judiciary for choosing to look at the appeal brought before it by the governor on its merit rather than primordial sentiments.
“The same party that was crying of external interference on the governorship dispute in the state is now calling on President Bola Tinubu and international communities to interfere,” he added.
He therefore urged the security agencies in the state to note the dangerous rhetoric hovering very close to instigating hate amongst citizens by the opposition party.
