The Nasarawa State Government has expressed satisfaction with the last sanitation of the year, 2023 and urged members of the public to sustain the tempo in the coming year.
General Manager Nasarawa State Environmental Protection Agency, Iliya Yusuf Adeka, made the appeal while addressing newsmen after the December sanitation exercise on Saturday in Lafia.
According to him, the reintroduction of sanitation by Gov Abdullahi Sule in the last four years has reduced the challenge of environmental diseases like cholera, dysentery, lassa fever, among other in the state.
Adeka described the level of compliance as impressive and attributed the feat to support from security agencies, traditional rulers, media as well as inspection team from the ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.
He also commended residence especially shop owners for clearing drainages around their environments and shops as well as motorists for keeping off the roads during the exercise.
The General Manager, however, appealed to Chairmen of various Local Government Areas (LGAs) to key into the exercise in order to ensure its success.
“My appealed to the state government is to strengthening the exercise by compelling local government chairmen in the 13 local government areas to key into the exercise by constituting task force on sanitation in their various LGAs.
He called on members of the public to always keep their environments clean by deposing their refuse in the designated dump sites to guard against the outbreak of diseases.
“Residents should cooperate more with the government towards ensuring that the state is clean in their best interest.
“If the environment was kept clean, it will guard against possible outbreak of any disease, thereby ensuring improved healthy living of the people,’’ he added.
He said Nasarawa state would sustain its status of cleanliness, as the government has set aside last Saturday of every month for sanitation exercise.
Meanwhile, Adeka said 15 persons were apprehended in Lafia LGA for alleged violation of environmental sanitation laws.
He explained that the defaulters were caught transacting their businesses and driving around town during sanitation hours.
